Organic and Animal Welfare Choices
Because it's our experience that meat quality is derived from three things, namely food, living environment, and genetics, the pigs on Becker Lane are fed only organically produced grain. Since many adhere to the maxim, you are what you eat; it seems a fitting choice for us. It creates a kind of nutrient cycle whereby grain grown on the Becker Family land is used to feed the pigs. Waste from the pigs can become fertilizer to produce still more grain. It is a sustainable cycle of food production not dependent on fossil fuel derived fertilizer.
Second, the animals are living outdoors so they are not forced to live above the gaseous odor of their effluent for the whole of their lives. This we know improves the taste of the pork. It is also part of our commitment to animal welfare where the animals live a happy life.
Finally, the genetics we use are Berkshire and Chester White breeds; traditional breeds known for their meat quality. |
